I have a My Book Pro Edition II as well, and I'm now on my third replacement from Western Digital. All of the drives exhibit the same problems, in spite of WD's 're-certification' program.
I've also gotten used drives from them as replacements, and even worse, scratched and scuffed drives. They are doing a horrible job with this drive. It overheats and shuts down. It's also unusable through Firewire 400. And it also crashes my Mac when connected through USB.
